Red Brick Building

The Old Hokkaido Government Building (affectionately known by locals as aka-renga or "Red Brick Building") was built in 1888 and is modeled after the Massachusetts State Capitol in the United States. The building has been in use for about 80 years, and now serves as a museum displaying exhibits on Hokkaido's history.

Built in French style, the 33m high and 61m wide Red Brick Building is one of the tallest and largest buildings in Japan, after a fire destroyed most of its interior. rebuilt in 1911.

Interesting architectural features of the Court include: approximately 2.5 million bricks were used for its construction, the exterior red brick is made in the French style and is heated at high temperatures to withstand pressure. With great force, the outer chimneys are faked to be in fact vents. Inside the building, the windows are designed with wooden double layers to avoid the harsh winter cold of Hokkaido. Three decorative domes with Western architectural carvings right inside the entrance of the main hall are popular photo spots for tourists to visit here.

The Old Hokkaido Government Building is free to enter and visitors can enjoy the exhibition halls on two floors and a souvenir shop.

Inside the corridors and galleries hang 20 paintings by local artists depicting important historical scenes in Hokkaido's history. In addition, visitors also have the opportunity to admire many other artworks on display inside the building, or stop by to explore the old Governor's Office with its intricately carved Arabic design.
