Bangkok
Bangkok, Thai Krung Thep, is the city, capital and main port of Thailand. It is the only cosmopolitan city in a nation of small towns and villages and is the center of Thai culture and commerce.
Bangkok is located on the Chao Phraya River Delta, about 25 miles (40 km) from the Gulf of Thailand. It was formerly divided into two municipalities - Krung Thep on the east bank and Thon Buri on the west - linked by a number of bridges. In 1971, the two were amalgamated into a city-province with a municipal government directly under the central government. In 1972, the city and two surrounding provinces were merged into one province, known as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok Metropolis). The capital is a bustling, crowded city, with temples, factories, shops and houses juxtaposed along roads and canals. It is also a major tourist destination, known for its rich cultural attractions and nightlife including a thriving sex industry.
The name Bangkok, popularly used by foreigners, is, in a sense, derived from a name that dates back to the time before the city was built, that is: the village or district (bang) of wild plums (makok). The Thais call their capital Krung Thep, which is the first part of its long, flowery official name meaning "City of the Gods, Great City, Abode of the Emerald Buddha, Impossible City trespass (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, Great Capital of the World endowed with nine precious jewels, The City of Happiness is filled with huge Royal Palaces, like heavenly abodes, inhabited of the reincarnated gods, a city bestowed by Indra and built by Vishnukarm. The initials Krung Thep is often translated as "City of Angels." The Bangkok Metropolis area covers 1,565 square kilometers with a population of over 10 million according to the 2020 census.
Bangkok's climate is hot all year round, ranging from 25°C during the "cold" season in December to 35°C at the height of the hot season in April. The average total annual rainfall is 1,500 mm, most of it in the summer. some of them fall in torrential downpours during the late afternoons of the rainy season, which lasts from mid-May to September; dry season from December to February.
