One of the best places to see cherry blossoms in northern Japan.

The history of Hokkaido shrine began in 1869, after the feudal system was abolished by the government and replaced by a provincial capital system and took control of the land. Emperor Meiji decreed the worship of three gods to oversee the reclamation of Hokkaido. The gods Ōkunitama-no-kami, Ōnamushi-no-kami, and Sukunahikona-no-kami, known as "Kaitaku Sanshin", meaning "three earth-earning gods" are worshiped in a place called Sapporo -jinja, later known as Hokkaido-jingu Shrine. The fourth deity worshiped here is Emperor Meiji. The temple burned down in 1974, but was restored in 1978.

Located in Maruyama Park, Hokkaido Shrine covers an area of over 180,000 square meters with over 1,400 sakura (cherry blossom) and 250 ume (plum blossom) trees, surrounded by tranquility and a stately atmosphere that makes you Forget the hustle and bustle of the city. You can see wild Hokkaido squirrels running around in the grounds, during Golden Week (late April - early May) many domestic and foreign tourists come here to enjoy the cherry and plum blossoms full bloom.

Coming to the shrine is both an opportunity for you to pray for peace for yourself and your family, and also to take a stroll inside the grounds, explore the architecture of Hokkaido shrine and enjoy the atmosphere.
