Profile
Located within the Da Ci’en Temple complex, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652 during the Tang Dynasty. It was commissioned by the legendary monk Xuanzang, famous for his long pilgrimage to India to bring back sacred Buddhist texts. Initially constructed with 5 stories, the pagoda now has 7 levels and stands about 64 meters tall after several restorations.
It served as a crucial center for Buddhist scripture translation and the safekeeping of relics, playing a pivotal role in shaping Chinese philosophical and literary traditions.
The pagoda’s austere brick design and symmetrical elegance make it a visual landmark in Xi’an. By late afternoon, the plaza below hosts a magnificent music fountain show, combining light, water, and sound for an unforgettable spectacle.
Visitors can climb the interior stairs to each level, gradually ascending to a panoramic view of modern Xi’an. In autumn, the golden foliage adds a poetic charm, blending history and modernity in one frame.
Best time to visit: April to October for mild, comfortable weather.
Getting there: Easily accessible by metro or bus from central Xi’an.
Nearby attractions: Da Ci’en Temple, Shaanxi History Museum, and the Old City Wall – all ideal for history lovers.
A visit to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is more than sightseeing – it’s a bridge to the past. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply enjoy traveling with freedom and curiosity, this pagoda invites you to reflect on centuries of wisdom. Come to Xi’an, and let the echoes of time guide your journey.
