Profile
Built in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty, the Xi’an City Wall lies at the heart of Shaanxi province’s capital city. It stretches over 13 km, stands 12 meters tall, and is nearly 15 meters thick, with four main gates: East, West, South, and North.
Each brick and watchtower tells a story of the city’s rich history. Xi’an was the capital of 13 dynasties, most notably the glorious Tang Dynasty, and the starting point of the Silk Road.
You can travel the wall according to your taste – walk slowly to soak in the atmosphere, rent a tandem bike for fun with friends, or hop on an electric cart for a quicker tour. Each option offers a unique way to experience the city wall.
Cycling along the smooth, paved top of the wall while gazing at the blend of ancient and modern Xi’an below is a surreal moment – you’ll feel the past and present intertwine right beneath your wheels.
There’s no need to follow a fixed schedule. Visit early in the morning for serenity, or during golden hour when the sun casts warm light on the old bricks. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for a comfortable ride.
Along the way, take breaks at rest stops to learn more about the wall’s history, enjoy local snacks, or simply breathe in the crisp Xi’an air.
The Xi’an City Wall is not just a relic of the past – it’s an invitation to travel freely, with ease and curiosity. Make this iconic site a part of your journey and embrace the joy of exploration in your own way.
