Located in one of southern Osaka's poorest neighborhoods, sandwiched between a housing project, a bridge road and a dilapidated shopping street, Tobita Shinchi is clearly... Yet despite this its murky and sad side, it might be worth a visit. The atmosphere is very special and offers a journey into the past.
This popular area has escaped property speculation, it has the atmosphere of the Taisho era (1912-1925) with old buildings still standing in this part of town. Of course, most are dilapidated but there are still old wooden buildings with beautiful sculptures of old billboards or old lanterns lighting up the facades. So the city ended up taking an interest in this century-old architecture, and in 2000, the Taiyoshi Hyaku Ban-(鯛 よ し ) building was designated a cultural property. Built in 1918 as a brothel and then converted into a restaurant in 1970, the establishment's 21 rooms remain mostly original. Here, there is nothing of the legendary simplicity of Japanese architecture and decoration. There are imitations of temples, bridges, piers, sculptures, magnificent murals... in short, an abundance of ornaments and a change of scenery. . Not traditional or high-tech, far from the touristy areas, Tobita Shinchi, dirty but authentic, offers a very different but no less real version of the Japanese image.
