Teppanyaki, where food is cooked on a cast-iron pan, doesn't seem like the kind of cuisine that earned a restaurant a Michelin star. However, the Ukai-tei in Omotesando is a proud Michelin star, and for good reason. The food is really amazing
Its best teppanyaki isn't about impressive culinary displays or unnecessary flames. Here, the quality of the ingredients is paramount and it's all about bringing out the best of these ingredients through the cast iron pan. Can you imagine the steamed abalone in the shell, the dried wagyu beef, and the salt-and-lime Matsutake mushrooms prepared by the talented chef at this Michelin-starred restaurant?
For the price, a small but delicate bowl of garlic fried rice is about ¥1580. A small piece of black beef steak, shared for two as part of a meal, might be over ¥30,000 but it could be the best steak you'll ever have in your life. If you can splurge at Ukai-tei, you'll have a very memorable meal here. While it's theoretically possible to show up without a reservation, the chances of being seated for lunch or dinner are pretty low, so it's best to call ahead to avoid disappointment.
