Buddha seated on a lotus in a meditative posture, was inaugurated and consecrated on 18 November 1989, a ceremony attended by the 14th Dalai Lama, who blessed the place. The statue is a symbol of Bodh Gaya and attracts pilgrims from all over the world. It is said that the statue took seven years to be built by V. Ganapati Sthapati inspired by the slogan “Bringing the rays of the Buddha to the Whole World” and around 120,000 masons participated in its construction. . The base stone of the statue, which was placed next to the Mahabodhi Temple in 1982, is made of red granite and blocks of sandstone.
The statue is partially hollow and contains about 20,000 bronze Buddhas inside. Besides the main statue, there are 10 smaller sculptures of Buddha's disciples around the statue. Inside there is also a spiral staircase leading from the ground up to the chest of the Buddha. The height of the whole building is 25m, 18m wide with a 20m high Buddha statue in which the lotus pedestal on which the Buddha sits is 1.8m high and the pedestal is 3m.
