Profile
Gujral is India's most versatile artist - architect, painter, sculptor, muralist, graphic designer and writer. During his four decades of architectural journey, Gujral has designed many large-scale buildings and complexes. He was also awarded the 'Order of the Crown' by the Belgian government for the innovative design of the Embassy building. This prestigious award has been given to a non-Belgian architect for the first time.
The campus of the Belgian Embassy is located on an area of more than 20,000 square meters in a luxurious diplomatic district - Chanakyapuri in New Delhi. The original scope of work assigned to the architect was to design and build the Prime Minister's Palace, the Ambassador's residence and the servants' quarters. The Prime Minister's residence and sunken tennis courts were merged later.
All parts of the complex are designed to look more like sculptures than buildings - clear proof that this is a work of a sculptor. The exterior brick façade is cleverly accentuated by exquisitely crafted arches with opening windows, while the domes and skylights are designed in various sizes to let in light. natural sun. With the design of this complex, Satish Gujral has not only continued the Indian tradition of brick construction but has also achieved a new level of excellence in brick architecture.
