Rebuilt in 1700, on the site of the old medieval square, the square now serves as the center of the city with its bold Sicilian Baroque masterpieces. Cathedral Square is considered a symbol of the beautiful city of Catania on the island of Sicily.

The church square is a place that attracts not only locals but also tourists from all over the world. The square is also the convergence of the main streets of Catania. The baroque architecture of the square and surrounding buildings was designed by the city architect -Giovanni Battista Vaccarini. Around the square, there are classical structures such as Porta Uzeda (1696), Duomo church (1739), Church of Sant'Agata (1767), Elephant fountain (1736) and Palazzo del orthio (1741). . These are all works by Vaccarini and make for a beautiful picture at night.

The Elephant Fountain was built in Roman times and is made from lava rock. Ancient Egyptian giant cylinders on elephant backs with decorative motifs of ancient hieroglyphs were brought from Egypt to Italy. Legend has it that this statue holds the power to appease the anger of the volcano Etna.

To the east of the square is the magnificent Norman Cathedral, dedicated to the city's Patron Saint - Saint Agatha. The present grandeur of the church is partly due to an eighteenth-century renovation, although the empty columns still belong to the original ancient structure. The inside of the chapel now displays a collection of valuable works and jewelry. This gallery is only visible four days a year in memory of the city's guardian. A seminary with classically symmetrical architecture and town hall add to the beauty of the landscape. Visitors can start their tour from the Cathedral square to feel the classical beauty but no less charming of the romantic city of Catania.
