Palermo is considered the capital of the island of Sicily and one of the most visited monuments here is the Norman palace (Palazzo dei Normann in Italian). This palace is also sometimes called the Royal Palace of Palermo.

The Norman Palace, located on independence square, is the perfect representation of the cultural mix in Palermo. Built to host the Arab emirates, it was later occupied by the Normans and the Spaniards expanded it to what it is now. Today, this palace is the seat of the Sicilian Regional Council.

The architectural style is cosmopolitan and keeps traces of different countries inhabiting. In the Palace, the most popular are the courtyards, gardens and King Roger's room with its impressive hunting scene mosaics.

But the crown jewel of the Norman palace is the Palatine Chapel, a masterpiece of the Arab-Norman-Byzantine style. The chapel was built by King Roger II as a place to receive the Royal family. The most impressive thing in the Palatine Chapel are the magnificent golden mosaics, which decorate both the walls and the ceiling. Some of them were even inlaid with human figures, a cultural feature that was not common at the time.

If you have plans to visit Sicily, visit the Norman Palace to experience its unique blend of architecture and see impeccable art masterpieces.
