Profile
The Greco-Roman theater was divided into three parts: stage, orchestra, and auditorium.
The stage, in front of the auditorium, is where the actors act. According to restoration experts, this stage is decorated with two rows of columns facing each other. The stage also features three large arches at a symmetrical distance from each other and six recesses placed symmetrically on either side of the central arch. Today, the remains of six niches and four Corinthian columns were restored after 1860.
The auditorium is formed by a series of stairs starting from the bottom to the top, where the audience regularly sits.
The orchestra is the lowest level of the entire theater. This space is reserved for artists playing music during performances.
With relics discovered directly in the hard rock of Mount Tauro, in the third century BC this theater could accommodate thousands of spectators.
It is known that Greek architects used to build their most important buildings as if nature could be a part of them, so the natural landscape is integrated with the architecture of theater, like light and air carved between the columns.
The shape of the theater can allow perfect sound to be heard from any area of the auditorium.
At the end of the imperial period, the theater was transformed into an arena for gladiator games. With the subsequent collapse of the West, everything was over. The main structures of the theater were removed. Only after the end of the war were parts of the original structure restored.
Today, traces of the Roman theater are not much left. But if you have time, you can visit the theater by the scene of Piazza del Duomo. The contrast between ancient and modern buildings will bring a pleasant surprise.
