Ramnagar Fort is located on the east bank of the Ganges, on the left bank of the Kud River in the middle of the Himalayas, about 40 km west of Udhampur. Ramnagar was also the capital of the former State of Bandarlta. During the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, it was ruled by Sikh ruke and Raja Suchet Singh. The 18th century red sandstone fort was built in the Mughal style by the ruler of Kashi, Maharaja Balwant Singh. It is said to be the ancestral home of the Maharaja of Banaras.
A 30-minute boat ride from Varanasi, the fortress is a majestic sight, rising from the riverbank.
