Winter is the season of brightly lit shows in Japan. Sapporo was the first city in Japan to start this tradition in 1981, since then other cities across Japan have followed with their own illumination events.
At this time, many art installations of all sizes, including light towers and glittering tunnels decorated with hundreds of thousands of LED lights throughout the main locations in Odori park create a scene. shimmering in color in the evening. Not only that, the roadside trees along the street are also brightly decorated, and the light party is always open until midnight, making it a great place for a late-night stroll. romantic!
Since 2002, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the cooperation between Sapporo and its sister city Munich, the German Christmas Market in Sapporo, is also held in conjunction with the Sapporo White Illumination at Ōdōri Park. It's packed with street stalls selling mulled wine, German cuisine and Christmas goods, and concerts will be held on stage, and if you're lucky, you'll receive gifts from Santa Claus, making the event even more epic.
The festival usually starts at the end of November, runs through December 25, and some spots remain illuminated until March 14, allowing passersby to enjoy the light shows. Roadside morning on "White Valentine's Day".
Today, the event has become a top attraction of Sapporo in winter, even being named one of the top three illumination venues in Japan.
