Referring to Jeju Island, South Korea is referring to the countless beautiful scenes that captivate people who love to explore with the peaceful scenery of the mountains and the sky, of the flower fields filled with festive space. In particular, it is impossible not to mention the Olle road, the famous trail that has appeared in the movies and attracts many tourists.
Olle in the local language means winding and narrow trails extending from the locals' houses to the main road. This famous trail is known as a network of 26 walking paths that stretch across the island. Created in 2007 by former journalist Suh Myung-Suk, the trails were originally inspired by her trip to the Camino de Santiago. Exhausted and tired after years of working as a journalist, she came to Spain as a way to recharge from nature. Upon her return, she felt that Koreans should also find relief from their often busy and stressful lives. She discovered, developed, and created a similar hiking trail herself in Jeju, and just over ten years later, more than 400km of Olle trail is one of the ten famous places in Jeju.
The Olle Trail offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the island, away from the crowded tourist spots. It's a great way to explore Jeju in a very personal way. This system consists of a series of roads around the outskirts of the island, totaling about 422 km and covering various terrains. It takes about 5-6 hours to go all the way.
The road is divided into 21 main routes and 5 minor routes, each with its own designated number that is numbered clockwise. Highway 1 begins in the eastern part of the island. Most of the trails follow the beautiful coastline, the rest pass by beaches, small villages, farmland… making it a great route to explore the island from many angles. The longest route is 23km long and the shortest is 5km. The road is divided into three levels of difficulty, but even the hardest level can be conquered by someone in good physical condition. Overall, the terrain here is not too difficult to go.
Stroll the farm paths that surround the tangerine groves, zigzag through narrow alleys to tiny houses with straw roofs, and admire the stone coastline carved into lava rocks black, you will have great experiences for your travel.
