This is an extinct crater with lush vegetation located southeast of Jeju Island and is a must-see destination for visitors.

Sangumburi Crater is one of the famous tourist attractions of Jeju Island, located at 768, Bijarim-ro, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju-do. Sangumburi means "volcano".

Sangumburi Crater was formed in a more distinctive way than other craters on the island. If the other peaks are pyramidal because the erupting material is stacked on top of each other, then the Sangumburi crater is formed as a crater with a hole inside as the material is ejected. The interior area is 300,000 m 2 , with an inner bottom circumference of 756m and an outer circumference of 2070m.

The crater exists an ancient legend. Jeju people believe that there was a couple who lived in the crater. Maljatddal is the daughter of one of the gods of Jeju. She falls in love with a shooting star named Hangam (aka Hanbyeol). Their love was not approved by their father and they escaped together to the inside of the Sangumburi crater. They were happy together for a while but in the end Maljatddal left, and Hangam stayed to take care of the crater. The people of Jeju honor Hangam as a protector of the island's animals and hunters. In the past, they performed shamanic rituals at Sangumburi to ask Hangam for a good hunting season.

Currently, Sangumburi crater is an area of 460,000 square meters , recognized as a Natural Monument No. 263 of Korea. This place attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year with its unique beauty. Seen from above, the crater looks like a circular artificial stadium. Sangumburi is home to more than 400 different species of wild plants, birds and animals. To the north is the Nandaeseong vegetation, which includes species such as red thorns and magnolias that grow with rare winter berries, while to the south of the crater is the evergreen Ondaerim vegetation. Maple and mountain mulberry trees cover the area.

To visit Sangumburi Crater, visitors can walk around half of the craters to look inside. There are binoculars on the main observatory so you can clearly see the scenery inside the crater. In addition, along the mountainside, there are also trails for tourists to rest and stroll for sightseeing. The climb to the crater is also very easy. It takes less than 5 minutes to reach the highest viewpoint. Here, you will see the beautiful scenery in front of you including the sea of Jeju Island, Mount Halla...

In addition, there are some traditional Jeju tombs in stone walls that are fenced but still allow visitors to see quite clearly. Sangumburi is also a suitable place to watch the sunset on Jeju Island, enjoy the panoramic view of the countryside as well as the landscape of the volcanic island. Normally, visiting the crater will take 1-2 hours.

Sangumburi is suitable to visit in any season of the year. However, the largest number of tourists is in the summer. In autumn, the slopes of the crater are covered with Jeju's famous Eulalia flower. In winter, this place is covered with white snow. Spring is when Sangumburi has wonderful green patches that captivate visitors.
