The Old Port of Le Panier - Marseille

"The Panier Quarter is the old town of Marseille, located at the back door of the town hall, with the ancient architecture and history of the city. The name Le Panier derives from the Le Logis du Panier lemon hotel. , which existed here in the 17th century. Here you can also see the ruins of the 6th century Roman Avenue."

The part of Marseille, just north of the Old Port, has been inhabited since 600 BC and is the site of the Greek colony of Massalia.
A developed city, it became home to a wave of Marseille immigrants and even today some from the Maghreb and Corsican.
It is a district with ocher walls, stone stairs and long corridor-like streets that rise above sunlit squares.
Until recently, it remained one of the poorest areas of Marseille, as evidenced by La Vieille Charité, a 17th baroque almshouse with three floors of galleries arcing around a chapel.
It is now an increasingly trendy district with independent boutiques and craft shops, cafes and plenty of imaginative street art.
