Opened in 1977 in the heart of Sapporo with the idea of creating a comprehensive modern art museum of regional and international stature.

The Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art displays collections, with more than 5,000 works both locally and internationally, including works by Jules Pascin and École de Paris, works of art by Japanese artists modern, especially those with a connection to Hokkaido, as well as a collection of famous glass works from Art Nouveau to the modern era. The permanent collections are exhibited on the first and second floors of Gallery A, connected by a large spiral staircase. Artwork from these collections is displayed and changes seasonally, four times a year.

On the second floor there is a large glass window area, which overlooks the outer grounds of the Hokkaido gallery decorated with some impressive modern art sculptures, it is also a pleasant place to relax. and stroll around. There is also a small restaurant serving healthy menus that utilize Hokkaido-grown vegetables so that visitors can enjoy delicious meals during their visit.
