Dieu Hoa Temple is a unique cultural heritage site located in the heart of My Tho city, on Trinh Hoai Duc street, Ward 2, Tien Giang Province. Established in 1792, Dieu Hoa Temple is not only a cultural destination but also a symbol of the connection between the past and the present, attracting many visitors and tourists interested in exploring the traditional culture of the Mekong Delta.

History of Construction and Unique Location

Founded during the Nguyen Dynasty, originally named Giang Tram Dieu Hoa Thon, Dieu Hoa Temple was initially built as a resting place for the local officials who were working in the area. Additionally, it was a place for worshiping the Thanh Hoang deity (The City God), the guardian spirit of the village, as well as ancestors who had contributed to clearing land and establishing the Hoa My, Hoa Hao, and Hoa Thoi settlements. In 1904, the Temple was seriously damaged by the Year of the Metal Dragon storm and had to be relocated. In 1913, the Temple was rebuilt at its current location on Trinh Hoai Duc street and has remained intact ever since, becoming a cultural symbol of My Tho.

The Architecture of Dieu Hoa Temple – A Fusion of the Old and the New

The architecture of Dieu Hoa Temple features a blend of classical and modern styles with its traditional "Tam" (three-gabled) design. However, during the reconstruction, the Temple adopted a distinctive "Cross" (cross-shaped) structure, setting it apart from other temples in the Mekong Delta. The temple consists of three main areas: Vo Ca (The assembly hall), Vo Quy (ancestral hall), and Chanh Dien (main sanctuary), all constructed with traditional materials such as brick, tile, and wood, featuring intricate and solid joints . Notably, after several restorations, Dieu Hoa Temple has preserved its majestic and refined atmosphere, with many carved patterns like the Tu Linh (Four Sacred Creatures: Dragon, Unicorn, Tortoise, and Phoenix), Tu Quy (Four Auspicious Symbols), and nature motifs like Mai Dieu (Birds and Plum Blossoms), Tung Loc (Pine and Deer).

Inside the main sanctuary, the highlight is the elaborate carvings, including the "Long Phung Tranh Chau" (Dragon and Phoenix fighting for the pearl) in the central space, along with the wooden beams and horizontal boards. gilded with gold. A unique feature of the temple is the couplet given by Minister Cao Xuan Duc, along with the horizontal board decorated with Tu Linh motifs, demonstrating reverence for the deities and ancestors of the Dieu Hoa village.

Every year, on the 16th, 17th, and 18th of the 2nd month of the lunar calendar, and the 10th day of the lunar month, Dieu Hoa Temple comes alive with the Ky Yen festival, attracting both locals and tourists. This is a time for people to pray for peace, good harvests, and prosperity for the region, as well as an opportunity to enjoy various cultural activities such as cake-making contests, sticky rice cooking, and displays of local fruits. The festival lasts for three days and nights, with each night featuring traditional opera performances that depict ancient stories, creating a lively, festive atmosphere and highlighting the rich cultural traditions of the South.

With over 200 years of history and several restorations, Dieu Hoa Temple has retained its ancient and majestic appearance, becoming a source of pride for the people of My Tho.
