The Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Center

Chiang Mai City Arts and Culture Center is located in the former Royal hall on Prapoklao Road. Built in 1924 with an elegant architectural design, the building was first used as the central administrative office of Monthon Phayap, then as Chiang Mai's City Hall until it was remodeled. and upgraded to a cultural center in 1997. The restoration of the center earned it an award from the Royal Society of Siamese Architects in 1999.

The center was established to promote understanding of Chiang Mai's roots, foster a sense of pride in local identity, and preserve cultural beauty. The center is divided into two areas, in front of which are various exhibits including photos, old artefacts, maps... in addition, it is also equipped with an impressive audio-visual display depicting history. of Chiang Mai from the first settlers to the development of the city. There is even a small-scale replica of a traditional wooden village. The rear area is a self-contained outdoor courtyard for cultural activities, temporary exhibitions, souvenir shops, cinema, Lanna art gallery and an archive.

The Arts and Culture Center is an invaluable resource for researching and learning about Chiang Mai's cultural heritage. The center is equipped with multimedia to introduce visitors to the origin of Chiang Mai's identity. The Best of Chiang Mai room features some of the city's finest inventions, including Bo Sang umbrellas, Lanna folk toys, San Kamphaeng porcelain and silk weaving. Meanwhile, the Life on the Hill room showcases some of the hill tribe's cultural heritage that still exists today.
