Located at 1,691.2 meters above sea level, Medeu is a world famous skating rink with incredible figures. Built in 1972, the skating rink has an ice surface occupying 10.5 thousand square meters, allowing the organization of international figure skating and hockey competitions. Nestled in the canyon, with favorable natural conditions such as a mild climate and optimal solar radiation levels, low atmospheric pressure, light winds and fresh glacial water, all these contributed to making a name for a skating rink on the top of a mountain like Medeu.

More than 120 world records have been set here by famous sports athletes. Over the years, the skating rink has been improved and modernized to a new level. Medeu is beautiful in any weather. You can admire the beauty of the skating rink from the steps built in the craggy Mohnatka hillside. There is a famous anti-mud dam built at an altitude of 1733 meters above sea level to protect the city against the mud flows that form on the peaks of Tay Tien Son mountain. The reservoir's capacity is about 6 million cubic meters of water. Seen from the city center, this place is like a slope covered with dense trees. At the beginning of the last century, a monastery was built in this area and today has become a popular pilgrimage site for Kazakhs. Coming here, visitors will experience the ascension stairs with 842 steps.

In recent years, Medeu has become a major concert stage, hosting the famous international music festival “Voice of Asia” (“Azia Dauysy”), which features not only Kazakh artists but also performances. There are many stars from all over the world.

Medeu is located in the southern suburbs of Almaty. From the city center, you can take bus number 12 from Dostyk road every 30 minutes (fare 80 tenge weekdays and 120 tenge on weekends). From Medeu, you can take the cable car directly to the Shymbulak ski area.
