Salt making in Long Dien district

Salt making is a long-standing tradition of the people of Long Dien District, salt here has become an indispensable ingredient in creating delicious bottles of fish sauce in Phu Quoc.

About 95km from Ho Chi Minh City, follow Highway 55 and then follow Provincial Road 44A to the direction of Long Hai Sea. You will notice the familiar image of salt fields with the white color of the salt mounds along the way. In addition, on the salt field, you will see windmills, the people of Long Dien district have skillfully created windmills to bring salt water into the fields, which has helped salt makers save considerable labor. The productivity is higher than that of the previous traditional method, it is estimated that there are nearly 50 windmills in the whole field.

The salt industry in Long Dien district has been recognized as a traditional profession by the Provincial People's Committee in 2018. The whole Long Dien district now has a total of 500 hectares of fields, with a crop of about 30,000 tons per year. Vietnam has a coastline stretching through many provinces, but not everywhere can produce good quality salt. Long Dien district is blessed with a long coastline and sunny weather, the salinity of sea water is very suitable to create satisfactory salt particles. The salt season is started from the 9th lunar month to the 4th lunar month next year. From the 9th lunar month, people started to renovate the salt fields, organize the construction of the embankment, and in November, they started to collect water to wait for the salt to crystallize. Coming to the fourth lunar month when it rains also marks the end of the salt season here. The quality of salt depends quite a lot on natural conditions. In order to improve the quality now, people here have used the method of spreading the tarpaulin below to create a clean source of salt with higher quality salt particles, the crystallization time is faster than before. Every day, from dawn, the people of Long Dien started work on the salt field.

Long Dien district salt is quite popular with Phu Quoc fish sauce manufacturers, the only type of salt to produce delicious Phu Quoc anchovy fish sauce. The most beautiful moment on the salt field is probably sunrise and sunset. When the rays of the sun shine down on the salt fields sparkle colorfully. This moment will make anyone feel the peace on this land. Currently, the salt-making area of Long Dien district has become a tourist attraction not only for adults but also for children, coming here will help people understand more about the hard work of salt-making.
