Profile
The neighborhood of Lindenhof, one of the oldest in Zürich, is located between Limmat and Bahnhofstrasse. Perched on a small hill, the square opens up to a splendid view of the rooftops of the Old Town. Built on a former Celtic settlement, this setting was held in high esteem by the Romans – largely for military reasons and not for scenic reasons – this high ground was perfect for a fortress and observatory.
In the 4th century, a Roman fortress was erected on Lindenhof. In the 9th century, the grandson of the hegemon of half medieval Europe, Charlemagne, built a regal palace as a residence on the same site. The area has continued to be a gathering place for the inhabitants of Zürich, right from the beginning of the modern era. The oath to seal the Helvetic Constitution was taken at Lindenhof in 1798.
Later, the emergence of prosperous textile industries also spurred the development of the left bank of the Limmat River, that is, the neighborhood of Lindenhof. Here, the choice of goods is considered extremely refined and luxurious. Today, the traditional shoe and fashion stores that characterize the image of the Lindenhof neighborhood still exist, adding character to the historic neighborhood.
Lindenhof neighborhood is a paradise of peace and quiet in the city center, a dating spot for couples, the elderly also come here to meet, go for a walk, exercise outdoors and play. flag.
