Profile
Xuan Huong Lake is an artificial lake with a circumference of about 5 km and an area of up to 25 ha. The crescent-shaped lake stretches over 2 km, passing through many famous landmarks of Da Lat such as the City Flower Garden, Yersin Park, Cu Hill, and Lam Vien Square. Surrounding the lake are cool pine forests, grassy areas, and vibrant flower gardens, creating an ideal space for visitors to walk or experience horse-drawn carriage rides.
Historical Formation
Xuan Huong Lake has an interesting history. Before the 1920s, this area was just a small water body from the Cam Ly stream. In 1919, under the direction of Governor Cunhac, engineer Labbé implemented the damming of the stream and construction of the lake.
In 1934-1935, engineer Tran Dang Khoa redesigned and built a large stone dam. This dam was located in front of the Dinh Quan Dao, where the then-Quan Dao, Pham Khac Hoe, was respectfully called "Mr. Dao" by the locals. When the dam, which was also a bridge, was completed, people referred to it as "Ong Dao Bridge".In 1953, Nguyen Vy, chairman of the town council, proposed changing the name Grand Lac to Xuan Huong Lake.
Origin of the Name Xuan Huong Lake
Xuan Huong Lake is not only famous for its natural beauty but also has a name rich in cultural and historical value. There are two hypotheses about the origin of this name that many have researched and passed down.
Hypothesis 1: Fragrance of Spring
The first hypothesis suggests that the name "Xuan Huong" comes from the distinctive fragrance of the surrounding plants in spring. When the weather is warm, the scent of flowers and plants mingles with the fresh air, creating a subtle and gentle aroma. This freshness contributed to the formation of the lake's romantic name.
Hypothesis 2: In Memory of Poet Xuan Huong
The second hypothesis relates to the famous poet Xuan Huong, one of Vietnam's prominent Nom poets of the 19th century. Since 1953, the lake has been named "Xuan Huong" to remember and perpetuate the romantic image of this poet. The name not only carries deep cultural significance but also honors the artistic values and romantic soul in Vietnamese culture.

The lake is considered the "heart" of Da Lat city and an ideal destination for those who love exploring natural beauty. Xuan Huong Lake in Poetry
Xuan Huong Lake has also entered poetry with romantic verses. Han Mac Tu once wrote:
"Be quiet, don’t talk much,
To hear the murmur from the lake’s depth,
To hear the willow's silk tremble in the wind,
And to hear the sky interpret love.""
These verses not only reflect the lake's romantic beauty but also deeply imprint the soul of those who love Da Lat city.
