Sung Sot Cave is one of the famous caves located in the core area of Ha Long Bay. In 2012, Sung Sot cave was honored to be one of the top 10 most beautiful caves in the world voted by the association of Czech travel agencies and brokers. This proves the great beauty of Sung Sot cave. The cave is located about 14km from Tuan Chau international cruise port, about 11km from Ha Long international passenger port. To visit the cave, visitors will go to one of the two ports above to buy boat tickets and tickets to visit the bay. Note, Sung Sot cave is only available on route 2.

The cave was discovered in 1901 by the French. Due to the beauty and magnificence in the cave, they named the cave "La Grotte des Surprises" (roughly translated as: Astonishing Cave). It was not until 1993 that the cave was exploited, welcoming the first visitors just 1 year before UNESCO recognized Ha Long Bay as a World Natural Heritage.

The cave is located on the Bo Hon island range, this is a typical, widest cave discovered on Ha Long Bay. From the marina, visitors have to pass more than 100 stone steps, threading under the trees to reach the cave entrance. The cave door has a very small area, but the cave is extremely wide. Just through a narrow rock crevice, visitors can feel the temperature difference between the outside and inside the cave, when the temperature inside the cave is always cool in summer and warm in winter. In the cave, people have made a system of paved paths along the way from the entrance to the exit with a length of more than 500m. The two sides of the path are lighting systems, adding to the fanciful beauty of the cave. The cave is divided into 3 compartments, the first compartment is the smallest, the left side has a rather special freshwater puddle. The ceiling of the cave has many small, regular and smooth indentations as created by the masons. The second compartment is wider than the first one. The layers of stalagmites and stalactites are also more abundant and diverse. The third compartment is also the widest and most beautiful compartment, the compartment has a very high ceiling. In this compartment, the tour guide will show you blocks of stalagmites and stalactites with unique shapes like turtles and children. horses, dragons, swords… along with mythical stories about those stone statues. Surprise Cave is a gift that nature favors for the people of Ha Long.
