Temple of Mathakuar

Nestled on the banks of the Gandak River, Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, India is a peaceful village famous for its Stupas and monuments. Only about 400 yards from the Parinirvana stupa is the Mathakuar temple. From giant statues and relics to scriptures and coins, important historical evidence is carefully preserved at the Mathakuar temple. There is a very old stupa architecture and the nearby temple can be seen easily from the outside gate.

Here, you can admire a large 6-meter statue of Buddha carved in mortar and Chunar stone. The statue is said to depict the final moments of His life before salvation was achieved. According to legend, it is believed that Buddha gave his last sermon here before his death. Mathakuar Temple dates back to the 10th century AD and to this day it remains one of the important monuments in Kushinagar because of its historical associations.
