Located near downtown Houston, the 445-acre Hermann Park is a favorite not only for city dwellers but also visitors from the surrounding areas. As a free, safe and enjoyable public space, Hermann Park brings people together and fosters a strong sense of community.
In May 1914 Houston industrialist and real estate investor George H. Hermann publicly announced his intention to cede 285 acres to the City of Houston for use as a city park across from the Rice Institute and thus to the City of Houston. Hermann Park was born. By 1916, the famous landscape architect George Kessler had completed a master plan for the park that was gradually implemented throughout the following decades.
Later, a number of important structures were built continuously inside the park such as Houston Zoo, Miller Amphitheater, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Japanese garden, McGovern Centennial garden, Hermann golf course, Lake McGovern has added to the importance of the park while helping to make the park one of Houston's premier recreational venues.
McGovern Centennial Garden : Opened in December 2014, this 15-acre garden cost $31 million and 8 years to complete. When visiting the garden, visitors can encounter more than 490 new plants of more than 50 different species, 760 hedge shrubs, 350 new roses in the Rose Garden, 106,875 other shrubs and perennials of 199 varieties, 115 species New camellias and 650 new species of azaleas in Woodland gardens and more.
Japanese Garden : is a peaceful island nestled in a pine tree near the Sam Houston Memorial, the garden was designed by world-renowned Japanese landscape architect Ken Nakajima and built to commemorate represents the friendship between the United States and Japan. Recognizing Houston's thriving Japanese community, the garden is built on five acres and combines traditional Japanese Garden design with a touch of Texas flair.
Miller Open Air Theater : is a free theater that hosts many cultural events, allowing visitors to watch concerts or have fun while picnicking in one of Houston's most popular parks. Rain or shine, visitors can enjoy music in this green open space.
Houston Zoo : Established in 1922, this entertainment destination serves 1.4 million visitors annually and is set in a lush 55-acre landscape right in the middle of Hermann Park. The Houston Zoo is home to over 6,0000 exotic animals representing more than 900 species. It is one of the largest collections in the country and is considered one of the best-maintained zoos in the country.
Hermann Park Golf Course : Built in 1922, Hermann Golf Course with 18 holes was the first public golf course in the United States. Here, guests can play golf under towering oak trees and manicured lawns.
Lake McGovern : Considered a masterpiece in construction circles, the lake has three islands, two of which are designated for migratory birds. Guests can fish at Bob's Fishing Pier or ride a pedal boat on the lake grounds.
On May 16, 1981, Hermann Park philanthropist - George Hermann was honored with a bronze statue, nearly 3 meters high, created by sculptor Lonnie Joe Edwards. The statue is placed on the corner of Cambridge and Fannin streets.
Hermann Park was recently named one of America's great public spaces by the American Planning Association, and the Park's McGovern Centennial Garden was honored with the Landmark Award from Keep Houston Beautiful Proud Partner of the Mayor).
