In the early 2000s, the City of Houston and local charities set a goal to build a new public green space downtown. This resulted in a series of parking lots east of downtown being acquired. After that, the construction of Discovery Green Park officially started in 2005 with an investment of up to 125 million USD and was designed by landscape architecture firm Hargreaves Associates - an architectural firm. internationally renowned landscape based in San Francisco.

Discovery Green opened to the public on April 13, 2008, and in its first two months of operation, an estimated 250,000 people visited the park. The park was later expanded with a series of buildings, offices, hotels and residential projects with a total value of more than $1 billion added to the surrounding area.

The prominent areas of the park that visitors can visit and entertain include:

Kinder Lake : a large lake with rich aquatic flora and model boat areas and a shallow lake specially designed to accommodate remote-controlled watercraft operated by parkgoers of all ages operating age. Guests can also kayak with relatives and family in this area.

Anheuser-Busch Stage and Fondren Foundation performance space : known as an open-air theater that hosts a variety of performances, including music, theater, film and dance, and faces a sloping lawn for audience seating. When there's no show, it's open to all park goers, be it a space to work, receive guests, or dine.

Brown Foundation Promenade : the area is lined with hundred-year-old oak trees, the largest of which is the Nancy G. Kinder oak tree - one of four large living oaks moved to the park.

John P. McGovern Children's Playground: The playground is built inside a tree-lined hill. The playground incorporates themes about the great migratory bird trail over Houston with pictures of several distinct bird species and accompanying signage for easy access for babies and visitors.

Gateway Fountain : The fountain is located at the entrance to the park from McKinney Street and is an extension of the playground area. This place is designed with two jet systems that create countless water activities on the gently sloping granite surface, the height of the water jet is also calculated to form a door of water inviting visitors. Public Art : Discovery Green features new works by artists Margo Sawyer and Doug Hollis. Care has been taken to ensure that the art installations will stand out visually in the surroundings of the park. In addition, the monument Au Fantome by Jean Dubuffet, an iconic sculpture by this world-renowned artist, has been relocated to the park.

The Grove and The Lake House Restaurant : where diners can dine with both menus created by award-winning Chef Robert del Grande. The Grove is chic and intimate, while The Lake House offers casual dining. The Grove's all-glass exterior overlooks a population of live oak trees, providing visitors with a serene, upscale atmosphere in the nation's fourth-largest city center. The Lake House attracts visitors with the concept of lakeside self-service and convenience counter service. Both restaurants follow Discovery Green's eco-consciousness, incorporating composting, recycling, green hygiene products and biodegradable packaging.

Discovery Green Park is pursuing a gold level in energy and environmental design of LEED certification based on site sustainability, water, energy and atmosphere efficiency, materials and resources. use in construction, indoor environmental quality and innovation in the design process.
