Profile
At its height, the Roman Empire occupied 2.5 million square miles (6.5 million square kilometers) and the center of the vast Empire was the Roman Forum, which now serves as a memorial. The ruins represent the power once wielded by the ancient emperors and their vast armies.
The main attraction of the Roman Forum is the front pillars of the Temple of Saturn (located at the northwest tip of the site). These pillars, along with the large marble Septimius Severus gate, built in 203 to celebrate the emperor's victory over the Parthians, are the oldest surviving ruins in the Piazza La. Code. Other highlights include the Triumphal Arch of Titus (1st century CE), the temple of Vesta and the church Luca Santi e Martina (both 7th century). With hundreds of monuments dotted around the site, there are less striking but equally interesting features like the marble mosaic floors inside the Curia Julia, the building the Senate used to debate.
The best way to visit the Coliseum is to combine it with a visit to the Colosseum, as the ticket price allows entry to both attractions (as well as the Palatine Hill). The ticket is valid for two days, so visitors can take their time to thoroughly explore the place. However, it should be remembered that the Square is only open until 6:00 p.m. most days during the summer and until 1:00 p.m. on Sundays. This location does not have much shade, so visitors need to bring sunscreen and water.
Be prepared for surprises as you explore the Roman Forum. The scene may be dilapidated, but the moment you start walking down the Via dei Fori Imperiali, you'll find the Roman Forum as impressive as ever.
The main entrance is on Via dei Fori Imperiali but there is another entrance at 30 Via San Gregorio. The square is located in the center of Rome. The bus stop and the Colosseo metro station are both nearby.
