Khon Masked Dance Drama is a performance art that combines elements of music, vocals, literature, dance, rituals and handicrafts. Khon performances include graceful dance movements, musical instrument performances, singing and splendid costumes. It depicts the glory of Rama, a hero and incarnation of the god Vishnu, who brings order and justice to the world. Many parts of the show depict Rama's life. The most famous is the part "Hanuman Chankamhaeng" which tells about Rama's battle with the army of Thosakan, king of the giants. Rama won the victory with the help of the famous white monkey warrior Hanuman. This section features 60 performers, with specially designed elaborate costumes.
Khon represents the high art cultivated by the previous dynasties of Thailand over the centuries. Today, it is a distinctive theatrical performance that can be widely received by audiences from other cultures. Khon has strong educational value, reinforcing respect for those of higher age and status, the interdependence of politics and religion, the supremacy of rulers and the triumph of the good before evil. Traditionally, Khon was passed down only in the royal family and in the families of the dancers. Today, the teaching of this art is available in educational institutions.
