Profile
This magnificent mausoleum was built under the direction of Queen Hamida Banu Begam in 1572 to honor her deceased husband Emperor Humayun - the 2nd king of the Mughal dynasty. Located in Nizamuddin, East Dehli, about 20 minutes by car from the center of New Delhi, Humayun's Tomb (or Makbara-e -Humayun) is one of the most fully preserved Mughal dynasty monuments and became UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The building, which blends Persian and Mughal elements, sets a template for subsequent Mughal architecture, culminating in the Taj Mahal completed in 1648.
The entire garden campus and Humayun's tomb are located on an area of 216,000 m2, the mausoleum is built on a stone foundation 7m high above the ground. The surrounding garden is built in the typical Persian arrangement of Char Bagh, with 4 paths leading to the central mausoleum, dividing the entire campus into 4 parts corresponding to 4 gardens, separated by moats. surrounding water. The mausoleum is 47 m high, consisting of 2 floors, the top dome is 8 m high and is covered with white marble while the rest is mostly built of red sandstone. The mausoleum is calculated according to the strict rules of Islamic geometry with an emphasis on the number 8.
There are a total of 124 large and small rooms for the king and members of the royal family with symmetrical designs and simple exteriors contrasting with complex interiors. Among them, the main tomb of King Humayun is the largest. In the center of the tomb room is placed a stele in the north-south direction to draw the boundary between King Humayun's tomb and other members of the royal family. The rooms inside Humayun's mausoleum are not fitted with lights, so you can only rely on the natural light from outside through the window slits to admire the interior.
Moreover, besides the tall trees, the garden area of Humayun's Tomb is also planted with many kinds of fruit trees and the sound of birds chirping so this is an ideal place to relax. Dispel fatigue after a long sightseeing journey.
The mausoleum is open at dawn and until dusk every day of the week.
