Profile
The Art Car Museum is a private institution dedicated to contemporary art with a focus on art cars, other fine art works and artists rarely acknowledged by other cultural institutions.
The 1984 Collision Exhibition at the Lawndale Art Center was the first event that helped lay the foundation for the museum's founding. Later, the increasing number of art car workshops and the regular art car parades led to the necessity of having a museum devoted to this unique art.
The Art Car Museum opened in February 1998. It was founded by artist Ann Harithas, a longtime supporter of the art car movement, and James Harithas, former director of the Corcoran Museum in Washington. DC and the Houston Museum of Contemporary Art. Car artist David Best created the museum's distinctive chrome and scrap metal exterior.
The art car movement is influenced by a modern tradition in art that emphasizes individual expression and the selection of images or themes culled from popular culture. All art cars are subversive and what they have in common is transforming the vehicle from a factory-made item into a personal statement or expression.
The museum, aka the "Garage Mahal", as many people know it, displays the most imaginative, elaborately crafted, and artistically crafted cars, low-riders and mobile devices , as well as art exhibitions by local, regional and national artists. The aesthetic of the Art Car Museum is a blend of folk art traditions and public art.
Often referred to as the "Art Vehicle Capital," Houston has the largest number of art vehicles of any city, and the Museum of Art Cars offers free admission for those who want to see the cars in person. a car with fancy designs, one of a kind.
