The Ho Chi Minh City Museum building was constructed from 1885 to 1890, designed by the French architect Alfred Foulhoux in the Neoclassical style of Western architecture, combined with elements of Eastern architecture. After its completion, the building was not used as a commercial museum as originally planned but became the Governor's Palace of Cochinchina (French, Japanese), the Residence of the Governor-General of Cochinchina (during the Tran Trong Kim government), the headquarters of the autonomous government of Cochinchina, the Residence of the Southern Governor, the Presidential Palace, and the headquarters of the Supreme Court. Before 1975, the building was commonly referred to as Gia Long Palace.
After the liberation of the South (April 30, 1975), the Military Administration Committee of Saigon – Gia Đinh used the building as a venue for cultural activities, artistic performances, and exhibitions on current topics to serve the people of the city. On August 12, 1978, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City decided to establish the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Revolutionary History. In 1999, after more than 20 years of operation, the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Revolutionary History was renovated, restored, and upgraded to become the Ho Chi Minh City Museum. The museum building was recognized as a national architectural and artistic monument in 2012.
