Taroko became a national park in 1986, the area stretches to include Hualien, Nantou and Taichung city. Taroko is famous for its spectacular mountains and marble canyons. Cliffs and gorges stretch along the Liwu River. Four million years ago, the island of Taiwan was formed by the collision of fossil plates. After millions of years of being eroded by the wind, the marble rocks have been impacted by the flow of the Liwu River to create impressive large canyons. With a mild climate and typical rugged terrain, this place has become the home of hundreds of rare plant and animal species.

The typical waterfalls that make Taroko National Park famous are Baiyang Falls, Yindai Falls, Changchun Falls and Lushui Falls. Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou) and Tunnel of Nine Turns (Jiuqudong). These are the most dramatic natural landscapes in Taroko, and the gorges here are known to be the narrowest and most treacherous. Another place you can visit when coming to Torako National Park is Tianxiang, located at the confluence of the Liwu and Dasha rivers. The name of this place is named after a vizier who lived in the 13th century of the Song Dynasty. The scenic spots in Tianxiang include Xiangde Temple, Tianfeng Temple, a suspension bridge, Wen Tian-siang memorial garden, plum garden and Tianxiang church. In winter, every year Plum Garden blooms, forming a sea of white flowers stretching from the highway to Xiangde Temple. From Taipei or Taichung, you can take the train to Hualien City and then take a bus to the national park area. The park does not charge an entrance fee, but if you want to enter Zhuilu Old Road, you will have to pay NT$200.

Admission to the park is free, but if you want to enter Zhuilu Ancient Road, you will have to pay NT$200. Some areas of the park require permits, including ecological reserves and areas for those who want to try their hand at climbing the mountain ranges within the park's grounds.
