The history of Kazakhstan's national circus dates back to 1968, when the first secretary of the Kazakh communist party - Dinmukhamed Kunaev suggested building a circus in the city center. That year, Kunaev and the main architect Vladimir Katsev began planning the construction of the circus. It was not until 4 years later, in 1972, that the Kazakhstan National Circus was officially open to visitors only. At that time, the circus had 2,060 seats spread out in 16 rows. After a few repairs in 2003-2006, the number of seats was reduced to 1798 with the desire to create comfort and convenience for spectators.

The premiere of the Kazakh circus was solemnly organized with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Culture of Kazakhstan on the occasion of the half-century anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan.

The design of the circus is reminiscent of a typical Central Asian tent, called a yurt, with a beautiful hyperbolic dome that has a light-colored scale. The oval lines surrounding the top of the dome transform into a pretty little circle. The circus consists of a circular main area and a rectangular two-story building. In the main building, there is a training ground, a canteen, an animal room and a changing room. To make the animals feel comfortable, there are two yards for them to walk in and a special bathroom just for them.

In April 2017, an exhibition hall on the history of the Kazakhstan National Circus was inaugurated. The museum reflects the history of circus art in Kazakhstan with early sketches of the circus, pictures of the founders, a stock of old circus performances, costumes of the artists, items and gifts souvenir gift. The exhibition is completely free and open to all visitors. It also has a three-star hotel with 70 rooms, most of which are used to cater to traveling actors from all over the world.
