Saint Michael's Church

St Michael's Church in Mahim, Mumbai is one of the oldest buildings in Mumbai. Church of St. Michael is famous for his special prayers and Christmas Masses.

The construction of this church dates back to the 16th century and was renovated to its present structure in 1973. St. Michael's Church was originally built as a Portuguese church in 1534. It was named St. Michael. San Miguel Church, this is also the oldest Portuguese Franciscan church in Mumbai. It was built by Antonio do Porto.

During the British rule, a famous chapel in Bandra that contained a painting of the Virgin Mary was destroyed and the contents recovered from the chapel were taken to St. Michael. The famous painting of the Virgin Mary has since been restored, which is also a major tourist attraction at St. Michael.

The church has undergone numerous overhauls and renovations since its founding in the mid-16th century. Although the structure has been restored with the best possible efforts, several renovations have resulted in its loss. Cool about the antiques it possesses such as old wooden benches, glass paintings, dome structures,... The church is decorated with several images of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. But several invasions and repeated overhauls robbed St. Michael.

It has seen a number of brutal attacks since its construction, mainly to gain custody. The battle was fought between the Apostolic Vicars and the Order of Padroado for control of the church. Church of St. Michael was part of two different battles over ownership between the two groups. During the first war, the Apostle gained guardianship for the next 60 years. After the final battle, guardianship was won by the Portuguese Order of Padroado. The church is a symbol of existence under many attacks and influenced by several colonial powers.

The followers of St. Michael's church believe that devotees must attend Wednesday's special Mass nine times in a row, in order to attend Novena (the Portuguese name for Wednesday). A devotee who successfully completes the ritual will be blessed by Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary for all his wishes and desires.

The local flea market is another attraction around St. Michael, which is famous for candles, wreaths and accessories made from fresh flowers.
