Profile
Located on an island bearing the same name, the church of San Giorgio Maggiore is one of the most photographed images of Venice. From here you can get some great views of the main island.
San Giorgio Maggiore is one of the most photographed cathedrals in Venice. Visitors standing in Piazza San Marco looking across the canal will be stunned by the temple's facade with gondolas swaying in the lagoon in front of it.
Construction of the Basilica was completed in 1576 and the architect, Andrea Palladio, also designed the neighboring church, Il Redentore.
Behind the Basilica façade, made of brilliant marble, is a meticulous interior that gives the impression of spaciousness. The third floor church has various paintings by Tintoretto.
As well as the paintings of this great artist (The Last Supper, The Conjunction of Christ and the Fall of Manna), the Basilica also has a painting by Sebastiano Ricci, the Coronation Madonna with Saints throw, completed in 1708. masterpiece by San Giorgio Maggiore.
To get a great view of Venice, we recommend climbing to the top of the Basilica Mosque (Campanile di San Giorgio Maggiore). It's almost as tall as a mobile building and you didn't have to worry about climbing the stairs, as you can only reach the observation deck by elevator.
