Water and Fire Cave

The Water and Fire Cave is one of the seven natural wonders of the ancient capital of Tainan and has been voted as one of the eight famous sights of the city over the past 300 years. Coming here, you will have the opportunity to witness a strange geological phenomenon when fire and water appear from the same cave at the same time, making it look as if fire is burning on the water. This phenomenon was discovered in 1701 by a monk from Dasian Temple, who described that the tops are extremely powerful and intense, focusing on only one point. After the Baihe earthquake of 1964, the fire became weaker, but it did not stop burning. Folk legend has it that flames were spewed from the Unicorn in a mysterious mountain cave. The incompatibility of water and fire makes this cave even more strange and special. You might not even believe it's real fire until you feel the heat as you get close.

At first glance, this wonder seems like magic, but the phenomenon can be explained by science. Taiwan has many geological fault lines, in which the fault of Liuchong River occurs in this particular area. Small bubbles of methane emerge from the fault line, creating flames between the rocks, which also have flowing water. Once inside the cave, if you look closely, you can see air bubbles in the water. There are "natural sausage plants" around, but remember not to eat them because they are poisonous. It is said that the fire here has been burning continuously for over 300 years, which makes this place one of the most special destinations in Taiwan.

The attraction is open 24/7 and there is no entrance fee. From Tainan city center, you can take TRA to Xinying station, take City Bus Yellow, get off at Baihe station, transfer to Tainan City Bus Y13, get off at Guanzihling station.
