1. Location and Name – Origin from a "Huyen Sy"
Huyen Sy Church (officially known as Saint Philip the Apostle Church) is located at 1 Ton That Tung Street, District 1, right in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. It is a must-visit destination for those who want to learn about the history and culture of Saigon, both past and present.
Why is it called "Huyen Sy"? This name is associated with a very special historical figure – Mr. Le Phat Dat, also known by the nickname Huyen Sy. He was a wealthy landowner and devout Catholic who dedicated much of his fortune to funding religious buildings, including Huyen Sy Church. He was also the maternal grandfather of Nam Phuong Empress, the wife of Emperor Bao Dai – the last empress of the Nguyen Dynasty. Through this structure, you can glimpse his influence on the city and the country.
2. Historical Formation – From a Charitable Sponsorship to a Religious Symbol
Huyen Sy Church began construction in 1902 and was completed in 1905, funded by Mr. Le Phat Dat. The church is 40 meters long, divided into 4 aisles, and 18 meters wide. It was one of the largest religious buildings in Saigon at the time, built in a European Gothic architectural style that stands out in the city center.
Did you know that after its completion, this church became an important religious center for the Catholic community in the Cho Dui area? During that period, many Catholics from the North and Central regions migrated to the South. Mr. Le Phat Dat's story is not only encapsulated in the buildings he constructed but also tied to Saigon's development, as he contributed significantly to charitable and social activities. The image of a wealthy man who lived simply and devoted most of his wealth to helping the poor is truly admirable.
3. Unique Architecture – A Masterpiece of Granite and French Stained Glass
Now, let's admire the unique architectural features of the church.
• The most prominent highlight of the structure is the 57-meter high bell tower. You can see this bell tower from afar, and it is a recognizable symbol of the church. Inside the bell tower, there are four large bells, imported from France in the early 20th century. These bells are not just sounds of faith but also signals tied to the rhythm of Saigonese life.
• The interior of the church bears Gothic imprints, with curved vaulted ceilings and beautiful stained-glass windows. When light shines through, you will see shimmering beams creating a sacred and mystical atmosphere. Tatinta believes anyone will be impressed by the mystical beauty of the handcrafted stained-glass paintings made in France.
• Additionally, the building materials are noteworthy, as the church is built from granite – a durable natural stone sourced from Bien Hoa. This element helps the church maintain its majestic and lasting appearance over more than 100 years of history.
Huyen Sy passed away in 1900 when the church was not yet completed. After his wife, Mrs. Huynh Thi Tai, passed away in 1920, both were buried in the chapel behind the sanctuary. Here, you will see the family statues. The statue of Huyen Sy is made of plaster, with a marble tomb. He is depicted wearing a gossamer brocade, with a headband tied, and hands folded in front of his chest. The statue of Mrs. Huynh Thi Tai is also made of stone, wearing a brocade dress, with hair tied in a bun, and feet in slippers, lying on two pillows. Next to them are the busts of their son Gioan Baotixita Le Phat Thanh and daughter-in-law Anna Do Thi Thao.
4. Historical and Religious Story – A Community Bonding Place
Huyen Sy Church is not just a place of worship but also a vibrant cultural and community activity center. You can see charitable activities and the sharing of love by the Catholic community organized here. For example, every Christmas and Easter, the church holds gift-giving programs for the poor, scholarships for disadvantaged students, and many other activities. This place truly connects people and enhances the community spirit.
5. Unique Travel Experience – Visit and Feel
When you visit Huyen Sy Church, besides admiring its unique architecture, you can also participate in sacred activities such as mass to feel the peace and sanctity that this place brings. A suggestion for you is to spend some time attending a Sunday morning mass, not only to experience the solemn space but also to feel the unity and warmth of the community here.
