Picasso was born in southern Spain but moved to Barcelona with his family at a young age. This highly influential painter spent his adult years here and was deeply attached to the city until his death in 1973. Picasso and his secretary, and best friends, Jaume Sabartés, chose Barcelona as the site of the first museum to display the artist's works.
The Picasso Museum is housed in five gothic castles in the bustling old town. Some of the buildings date back to the 13th century. The castles come together and the permanent collections are arranged chronologically.
The room closest to the entrance features photographs, paintings and sketches from the artist's childhood, as well as his biography. Follows his timeline in Paris 1900 to 1901, "Green Age" to 1904 and Las Meninas, in four rooms. Las Meninas is a series of 58 paintings painted in 1957 and reproduced by the famous Las Meninas page painter Diego Velázquez. Picasso donated the paintings to the museum in memory of his close friend Sabartés.
