“The temple is more than a hundred years old nestled next to high-rise buildings in the busy commercial area. This is a place of worshiping familiar beliefs of local people and is also a frequent place for domestic and foreign tourists.”

Jade Emperor Pagoda was built in the early 20th century by a Chinese named Luu Minh, from China to Vietnam to live and do business. He was a follower of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, so he wanted to build a temple to worship Buddha and the Jade Emperor. In 1982, Venerable Thich Vinh Khuong was the abbot of the temple. Since then, the pagoda has been under the Vietnam Buddhist Association. In 1984, Ngoc Hoang Pagoda was renamed Phuoc Hai Tu, but people still call it "Pearl of Ngoc Hoang" because the central nave is the place to worship the Jade Emperor according to Chinese beliefs.

Jade Emperor Pagoda was restored 4 times in 1943, 1958, 1985 and 1986. In 1994, the pagoda was recognized as a National Monument of Architecture - Art. In 2016, Jade Emperor Pagoda was honored to be visited by US President Barack Obama.

Jade Emperor Pagoda is a large temple with an area of 2300 square meters, creating a comfortable space for people to walk and visit. The pagoda is impressively designed in the style of Chinese religious architecture with many paintings and richly decorated walls. The roof is covered with colorful yin and yang tiles. There are several statues on the roof and gable.

In front of the temple, there is a small shrine with a guardian deity. The three-way gate stands out with its winding lines like waves. In the middle of the yard, there is a fish tank and a turtle tank on the right, where people let loose and wish for a peaceful life. Inside the pagoda, there are many paintings, statues, and altars made from different materials such as wood, ceramic, and cardboard. The pagoda has about 300 statues, including 100 statues made of ink and paper, symbolizing the gods meeting the Jade Emperor.

Jade Emperor Pagoda has 3 halls: front hall, middle hall and main hall. The front hall has a statue of Buddha, visitors often burn incense and pray here. In the main hall, there are two wooden statues of generals taming tigers and dragons. This is the place to worship the Jade Emperor of God, attracting many tourists to visit and pray for peace. There is also an altar of Kim Hoa Thanh Mau and 12 midwives. This is the most crowded area because many people go there to pray for their children. To the right of the main hall, the statue of Quan Am is placed in a solemn position.

According to folk beliefs, Ngoc Hoang is known as the supreme god who rules over all things in heaven and on earth. He has the right to decide the fate of people. Besides Ngoc Hoang, there are many other gods to help him rule. Jade Emperor Pagoda is famous for fertilization. Couples without children often sincerely pray to the place of worship of Kim Hoa Thanh Mau and 12 Ba Mu. Kim Hoa Thanh Mau is the goddess who takes care of fertilization on earth.

Locals and those who come to the Jade Emperor Pagoda to pray for their children are given a red thread around their wrists. If they wish to have a son, they must pray and hang that thread on the statue on the right. If they wanted a daughter, they would hang it on the statue on the left. Then, they rub the belly three times and rub the belly of the baby statue at the midwife's feet three times. Finally, they rub their belly 3 more times. If their supplications come true, they have to buy fruit, incense and fresh flowers to go to the temple and show their gratitude to the goddess.

Many people come here to pray for good opportunities in love. Locals believe that, when they burn incense, say the names of themselves and their loved ones, and then touch the statue of the matchmaker, their wishes will come true. In the central space where the Jade Emperor is worshiped, many people gather to pray for health, career, and fame with respectful and dignified gestures.

Thanks to its impressive and unique beauty with sacred legends, Ngoc Hoang Pagoda has become one of the most wonderful destinations that tourists often visit when coming to Ho Chi Minh City.
