Rome contains within it a special country - Vatican City. This independent country is one of the most important religious sites in the world and St Peter's Square is an iconic place where many important religious events take place.

The current square is the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In the mid-17th century, a baroque architect was appointed to create a space that would allow the greatest number of people to see the Pope as he addressed the public from the Vatican Palace. Every Easter, pilgrims still gather in Piazza San Pietro to witness the Pope deliver his annual encyclical. In fact, it is rare to have a quiet day in the square.

Located in front of the Vatican State, St. Peter has an elliptical architecture and is framed by two large sets of columns. Looking right above the colonnade, you'll see countless statues, a collection of divine figures including Saint John the Baptist and Christ the Redeemer. The statue of Saint Peter itself occupies the right side of the steps leading up to the church, and was carved by Giuseppe De Fabris. St. Paul is on the other side of St. Peter.

Square St. Peter's in the center of Rome. Visitors can walk from the city center to it; The most direct route is to cross the Tiber and go straight up Via della Conciliazione. Ottaviano tram station is a short walk along Via Ottaviano.

Visiting St. Peter, seeing the crowds of people hoping to catch a glimpse of the Pope would be an exciting start to exploring the Vatican.
