Profile
Shin-Umeda Shokudogai (Shokudogai means "restaurant street") was founded in 1950 with the participation and guidance of a number of veteran shops who have established businesses in the area. Located in the heart of Umeda, the entrance to Osaka, this restaurant street is bustling with people every day. What started with 18 stores at the time of its inauguration, now, nearly 100 restaurants line the Shin-Umeda Shokudogai. Of the 18 stores that initially opened, 8 are still open to customers. Japan was still struggling economically in the early days of Shin-Umeda Shokudogai, and very few people could come to drink on a daily basis. What has helped the restaurants through this rough start is that most of the customers come from JNR Osaka Station, i.e. tourists.
Entering Shin-Umeda Shokudogai is like stepping back in time to the 1950s, minus the potential fire hazards. You leave the shiny, glittering areas of JR Osaka Station into a series of narrow, low-ceilinged alleys lined with equally small restaurants where you can eat practically anything and everything - from okonomiyaki to udon, there's something to satisfy every craving here. There's even a hidden French restaurant or two somewhere here.
There are more than 100 eateries in this 2-storey food center. You could spend an evening here doing what Osakans do best - eat 'til you roll home. One of the best ways to enjoy Shin-Umeda Shokudogai is to go with a friend or two, touring around a number of restaurants over the course of an evening - like going to a bar but actually enjoying more of the food. is a drink
