Profile
The Dong Thap Museum is not only an attractive tourist destination but also a place that preserves the distinctive historical and cultural values of Dong Thap Province. Built on the foundations of ancient French colonial architecture, the museum has become an important place where visitors can explore many historical stories and the revolutionary struggle of the people in this area.
History of Establishment:
The Dong Thap Museum was founded to preserve the precious historical and cultural relics of the province. Before it became a museum, this area served as the headquarters for various French administrative agencies, such as the Cao Lanh district office, and later as the headquarters of the puppet government’s military in the Kien Phong province. The site not only marks the history of economic and social development but also bears witness to the courageous struggle of the Dong Thap people during the wars against French and American imperialism.
With its deep historical significance and revolutionary tradition, in 1978, the People's Committee of Dong Thap Province decided to establish this site as the Provincial Museum. It has since become a place to educate people about patriotic traditions and a destination where future generations can learn more about the process of building and defending their homeland.
Structure and Design of the Museum:
The Dong Thap Museum covers an area of 11,000 square meters, divided into two main areas: the Exhibition Hall and the Outdoor Display Area.
* Exhibition Hall:
The museum’s exhibition hall consists of two floors, with more than 1,400 square meters of exhibition space displaying thousands of valuable artifacts and scientific documents. The main themes presented here include:
- Nature, land, and people of Dong Thap: Reflecting the process of land reclamation, expansion, and development in Dong Thap.
- History of the wars against French and American forces: Images and artifacts documenting the sacrifices and victories of the Dong Thap people during the wars of resistance.
- Cultural activities of the Dong Thap people: Unique cultural traits of the Mekong Delta’s residents are preserved and showcased through folk artifacts, art, and images of daily life.
In addition, the museum houses many relics of the Oc Eo culture from the Funan Kingdom, excavated at Go Thap, as well as many ancient ceramics from the 11th to the 20th centuries, coin chests from the Gia Long and Minh Mang reigns. These artifacts are vivid evidence of the cultural exchange between Eastern civilizations.
* Outdoor Display Area: This area displays military trophies from the wartime period, such as airplanes, large guns, cannons, and other military equipment. These relics are not only historical records but also help visitors better understand the fierce battles fought during these wars.
Architecture and Space:
The Dong Thap Museum is designed in a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western architectural styles, with a balance between traditional cultural elements and modern design. The museum building is situated in a green, serene space near the Cao Lanh River, creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere for visitors. The surrounding scenery also enhances the aesthetic and historical value of the site, offering a comfortable space for those interested in learning about the past and culture of Dong Thap.
The Dong Thap Museum is not just a place for displaying artifacts; it is also a vibrant space for historical and cultural education. It is an ideal destination for those who wish to explore the history of Dong Thap and the achievements of its people in the fight to protect the nation. Visiting the Dong Thap Museum, tourists not only discover valuable cultural heritage but also experience the essence of the Southwestern region of Vietnam.
