Experience watching dog racing at Phu Quoc Ridgeback Center
A unique activity where visitors can watch Phu Quoc ridgebacks compete on an obstacle course.
Phu Quoc Ridgeback Dog Conservation Center is one of the few remaining places to nurture and protect the existence of dogs which are considered as the symbolic animals of Phu Quoc.
Phu Quoc Ridgeback or Phu Quoc dog is found in Phu Quoc, it is thought that the origin of this breed is in Thailand or Africa. This is a unique breed of dog that has a vortex running down the back that is caused by a part of the hair growing in the opposite direction of the overall body hair. The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is one of three such ridgeback breeds in the world, the other two being the Thai Ridgeback and the Rhodesian Ridgeback. The Phu Quoc Ridgeback is prized for its temperament, athletic ability, loyalty, and odorless, non-shedding coat.
Besides the main function, the center also organizes a dog race, this activity is quite interesting and receives attention from many domestic and foreign tourists.
Dog races at Phu Quoc Ridgeback Center will not be like other traditional dog races. Unnumbered dogs will run on a track filled with obstacles such as running through tall grass, climbing over trees, diving into tunnels and swimming in water. To motivate the dogs to run, there is a trainer who always runs along the track and blows his whistle.
Normally, during a visit to Phu Quoc Ridgeback Center, visitors will see two dog races, the first is a warm-up race, then the real race. After the completion of both races, visitors will be guided by staff on a tour of the facility and introduced to how a Ridgeback is raised, bred, and how they live there.
Two times dog racing takes place during the day:
Morning: 09:00 - 11:30
Afternoon: 14:00 - 16:00
