The giant wheel was erected in 1897 to mark the 50th year of Emperor Franz Joseph's accession to the throne. Located just off the entrance to the Wurstelprater amusement park, its cabins offer a great view of the city and Prater park. The diameter of the wheel is nearly 61 meters, the whole iron structure weighs 430 tons. The wheel rotates at a speed of 2.7 km/h.
The Giant Ferris Wheel has also played "lead roles" in several Hollywood films, such as "Third Man" with Orson Wells or in the James Bond adventure "The Living Daylight" played by Timothy Dalton. That is why it was also included in the list of European Film Culture Treasures by the European Film Academy in June 2016.
In the entrance area of the Giant Ferris Wheel, eight cabins provide insights into the 2,000 years of Vienna's history. Individual cabins can also be booked for sumptuous dinners featuring the best of Viennese cuisine, cocktail receptions and weddings. The giant Ferris wheel is open all year round.
