Alamo . Square

Alamo Square Park, the focal point and name of the neighborhood, consists of four hilltop city blocks overlooking much of downtown San Francisco, with a number of large and distinctively architectural mansions along around the perimeter, including "The Painted Ladies", the famous postcard motif. The park is bordered by Hayes Street to the south, Steiner Street to the east, Fulton Street to the north and Scott Street to the west.

Alamo Square Park has a playground and tennis court, frequented by neighbors, tourists and dog owners. On a clear day, the Transamerica Pyramid and the summits of the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge can be seen from the center of the park.

The Alamo Square neighborhood is characterized by Victorian architecture , largely untouched by urban renewal projects in other parts of the Western Addition . The Alamo Square area is the second largest concentration of homes on 930 square meters in San Francisco, after the Pacific Heights neighborhood.

A row of Victorian houses facing the park on Steiner Street, known as "The Painted Ladies", is often shown in the foreground of the panoramas of the downtown area. Several movies, TV shows, and commercials have been shot in or around Alamo Square.

There are many architecturally significant residences on the perimeter of the park, including the William Westerfeld House, the Archbishop's Palace, the residences of the Imperial Russian and German consuls in the early 1900s, and mansions on the row of houses diagonally opposite the Painted Ladies.
