Profile
Frankfurt has a single large Christmas market in the historic quarter of the city around Römerburg and Paulsplatz. The size of the market stretches from the square from Hauptwache down to the waterfront harbour. The history of the Frankfurt Christmas market dates back to the late 14th century, when mystery plays were performed in Römerburg.
Over the centuries, the Frankfurt market has developed its own specialties. Two of them are based on a mixture of toasted marzipans: Brenten is rectangular, and Bettmänchen is made with almonds. Another dish is the novel Quetsoolänchen with different shapes molded from prunes and seeds.
Like most Advent events, the market opens in late November and runs until the day before Christmas Eve. The market sells traditional German food, decorations, and drinks during the Christmas season. The market attracts about 3 million customers annually.
Frankfurt is also one of the places that started exporting Christmas market styles to other countries. The Frankfurt Market has hosted many traditional German markets in several British cities such as Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham and Bristol starting in 1997 in Birmingham.
