“From rare spices, scrumptious meat, fish and poultry to delicious honey, the market is always alive with buying and selling activities in a diverse and colorful hall that offers a bit of everything. things along with lots of things to try for shoppers”

During the reigns of Count Ulrich V and Count Ludwig I, a manor - a large half-timbered building, was built on the market square. The manor house includes stalls on the ground floor selling fruit, bread, and meat, and the courts are located on the upper floor. When the house was demolished in 1820, King Wilhelm I took the so-called Old Market Hall so that winemakers' families could sell their wares under his protection. a solid roof, from the vagaries of the weather. Take for example from “Les Halles” in Paris, the food markets in Stuttgart have been unified under one roof. The iron building with a glass roof was very modern for its time, opened in 1864.

The Stuttgart City Council decided to build a larger hall on the same site in 1906. An architectural competition was organized by Martin Elsässer in 1910. Martin Elsässer's sketches were based on the contrast of space inside and outside the building: With arches, windows and turrets, the Art Nouveau façade blends harmoniously with the Old City of Stuttgart intact, the interior remains intact. of the building was a very modern design at that time.

Above the exposed reinforced concrete beams is a curved glass roof extending across the 60 x 25 meter lobby, providing daylight for the merchandise display. The open space is surrounded by two three-story walkways with arches on the ground floor. The second floor remains open with apertures so that the hall can be viewed during a tour. The third floor, which is not open to the public, contains offices. Opened on January 30, 1914, with more than 400 stores, Markthalle quickly developed into a central trading hub for the region.

The Markthalle Market is the ideal place for those looking for fresh fruits and vegetables, exotic spices and international specialties. From pineapple, eggplant, oyster mushroom, sweet potato, star fruit, kudzu, okra, Jerusalem artichoke or salsify, all are sold by the fruit and vegetable dealers according to each season of the year. In addition, fresh fish, poultry, game meat as well as high-quality meat and sausage products are always trademarks of Markthalle Stuttgart. Whether it's wild duck breast or lamb's leg, saddle or beef fillet is the best: at the market, traders pay special attention to the freshness of the product.
