The Imperial Citadel of Hue, also known as the Imperial Citadel of Hue, has more than 100 prominent architectural works such as: Ngo Mon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, Dien Tho Palace, Truong Sanh Palace, Hung Mieu, and The Mieu. In 1802, after ascending the throne, King Gia Long chose Hue as the capital. King Gia Long personally conducted a survey to select the location to build the citadel complex in 1803. With the purpose of serving as a place for court meetings and royal activities, King Gia Long was very deliberate in choosing the location. In 1804, the citadel began to be built with the main face facing Ngu Binh mountain. It was not until 1833, during the reign of King Minh Mang, that this work was completed.
The complex of works is arranged on a symmetrical axis, the central part is the items only for the king. The works on both sides are strictly distributed according to each area, following the principle of "left man and woman", "left van right martial", counted from the inside out. Even the shrines have an arrangement in the order of "left front, right after, in turn from time to time".
Surrounded by a system of citadels preserving the architectural quintessence of the East and the West. The Imperial Citadel has a nearly square ground, built of bricks, 4m high, 1m thick, surrounded by a protective moat, has 4 main entrances: Ngo Mon (main door) is located in the South, Hien Nhon Gate is located in the East. , Chuong Duc Gate is located in the West, Hoa Binh Gate is located in the North. The bridges and lakes dug around the outside of the citadel are named Kim Thuy.
